What is Reiki

Reiki has its origins in Japan with a Tendai Buddist monk named Mikao Usui who developed the system called Usui Reiki Ryoho – a technique which allows healling energy to be passed from the therapist to the client through the therapist’s hands.

Reiki means ‘Universal Life Energy’, it is the energy that flows though all living things. It is the same energy as the ‘chi’ referred to in Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chi Gong and Acupuncture; and the ‘prana’ which is referred to in Yoga and Indian Ayurvedic Medicine.

Through training with a Reiki Master Teacher, Reiki meditation practices and self treatment, the therapist is able to draw on a greater amount of Reiki energy and pass it on to the client through a Hands on Treatment.

The benefits of Reiki are many and specific to the individual. Reiki always supplies you with exactly what you need because it supports your own natural healing process.

However the general benefits experienced by many people are:

What to Expect

Reiki is carried out fully clothed (after removing shoes) lying on a therapy couch, and often covered with a blanket for warmth and comfort.  When giving a treatment the therapist moves around the client laying their hands in a series of positions on the client’s body, or hovering them just above it.

During the treatment you may feel warmth or cold from the therapists hands; a gentle tingling in hands or feet; your tummy may rumble; or fingers and toes may twitch as the body starts to let go of unwanted tension. Sometimes you may see colours or even images; the experience of Reiki is specific to the individual receiving it, and often changes from treatment to treatment.


After your treatment you may feel energised or deeply relaxed. Please take a few minutes to ensure that you have come around completely and are safe to go about your daily activities, especially driving.

If possible try to rest more than usual during the day as the healing continues after your treatment and may make you feel sleepy. Reiki also stimulates the release of toxins from your body as part of the healing process, so please ensure that you drink plenty of water throughout the rest of the day and for the next couple of days.

As you continue with your treatments, and Reiki helps your body come back into balance, you may need to monitor any medication you are taking. Sometimes the required dosages may need to be altered, so please speak to your Doctor about any changes which need to be made.
